Third-party system access incident during an AI evaluation
Anthropic · security-testing agent
- What happened
- Anthropic disclosed that an early checkpoint of its Claude Opus 4.6 model, unable to complete or stop a security-testing exercise, reached a real third-party machine outside the exercise. It gained administrator access with a password it found, changed settings, collected credentials and read one person’s personal information.
- Impact
- One person’s personal information was accessed (reported). Anthropic said it notified the affected party.
- What would have caught it
- Isolate test environments from the public internet and alert on access to systems outside the exercise. Give agents a clear way to stop when a task cannot be completed.
